KOLBUS Perfect Binding
Investment in modern machine technology must be considered in the face of continuously changing production requirements. The new generation of KOLBUS perfect binders introduces a variant, the new KM 473 perfect binder responds to short-term market developments with quality, speed and versatility.
Innovative technology and great flexibility allow for fast make readies at an economical cost. The interplay of this >multi-talent<, the KM 473, with KOLBUS gathering technology results in an unbeatable combination.
As a new benchmark for performance and flexibility this new, fully automatic perfect binder represents economical quality production for all market segments. - Simple operation, shortest make ready times
The KOLBUS Copilot"-System
The KOLBUS Copilot'-System provides the key for fast, uncomplicated resetting, multi-machine data exchange and malfunction free operation. The operator is guided through the operating procedure by an interactive dialogue. The KOLBUS Copilot' technology represents the ideal interaction between man and machine.
The KM 473 is equipped with four touch screen monitors, two of which are the central operating units. Two additional monitors are also located near the processing stations. The entire machine is visualized on the monitors. All machine functions as well as control information are clearly displayed using colour graphics and photographs.
Touch screen technology allows the displayed functions to be triggered simply by touching them. Control information and illustrations on the touch screen monitor are identical with those on the other monitors.
Working method
• Section/Block feeding
The gathered, loose sections are positioned in the transfer channel of the gathering machine standing on their spine, jogged and transported to the perfect binder infeed.
• Infeed
The sections are jogged for the first time in the gathering machine, then transferred to the infeed of the perfect binder for further jogging and alignment before transfer to the clamp.
• Transport clamps
The gathered, aligned sections are firmly held by the transport clamp and guided to the downstream processing stations.
For control purposes, the clamp can be opened by a simple lever action after each operating step.
• Precentering of the joint
The joint is precentred with a pusher, thus, preventing deformation of the spine.
• Spine processing
Well aligned the clamp now guides the block through the different spine processing stations.
First, the block spine is processed by the main milling cutter. Disc clamping on both sides along with independent pressing on the block joint guarantee a firm hold of the blocks in the clamps.
All spine processing tools are attached to the same tool platform for maximum variability in the smallest space. All tool types - equaliser, notcher, micro-notcher-are produced by bolting the various cutters onto the standard tool bodies. The tungsten carbide tips give a constant high cutting quality throughout a long operating life.
Gluing stations
• Spine gluing
The perfectly prepared block is now guided into the gluing zone and subjected to spine gluing. Two synchronously running application rollers apply the glue. All systems are equipped with a scraper control for glue application. While the hotmelt and PUR gluing stations are equipped with a counter-running, heated spinner roller.
• Side gluing
Both sides of the block are glued using horizontally arranged, cylindrical discs. The head/tail gluing can be fine adjusted on the run.
• Premelter
Hotmelt glue is heated and liquified in the movable pre-melter, then pumped into the respective glue pots of the binder via a heated hose. The signal to pump is triggered automatically through a level control in the glue pot of the perfect binder. The indispensable premelter distinguishes itself through its high operational reliability as well as low operating costs.
• Intermediate heating zone
An infrared heater has proved ideal for hotmelt bound books. If keeps the glue film soft and guarantees reliable adhesion of the cover to the block. The surface radiators are located in the turn of the binder.
• Scoring station
The cover passes the scoring station between the top and bottom scoring tools. The covers can be provided with either 2 or 4 scores.
The pairs of scoring tools as well as the entire scoring unit can be laterally adjusted and corrected during production by means of central adjustments. Scoring can be performed positive or negative.
• Cover registering and pressing stationFollowing separation, the cover is registered in relation to the block at four points at the head and tail which also makes it possible to adjust covers which are not completely square. Pushers attached to the transport toothed belts guide the scored cover beneath the block retained by the circulating transport clamp. The cover is pressed firmly on the block by means of the follower-type pressing table, and the synchronously following pressing rails.
The long synchronous run of the pressing table and clamp guarantees excellent processing quality. Spine pressing and lateral pressing may be corrected during production.
The time of lateral pressing in relation to pressing of the block spine can be varied. This offers the possibility to individually adapt to different cover materials, in order to always achieve precisely shaped, square block spines.
• Gripper carriage delivery
KOLBUS remains true to its top quality philosophy with the patented gripper carriage delivery. The gripper carriages grasp the products before the clamp opens, and transport them out of the binder standing on their spine, laterally pressed and controlled. In other words, the gripper carriage delivery prevents the free fall of the products into the delivery. The setting time of the freshly bound products is therefore extended to retain their shape and the spine has time to stabilize.
• Delivery
The products leave the binder cither via a belt delivery or the described gripper carriage delivery standing on their spine, and are then transferred into the delivery unit. Then the product is transported on transport belts (cooling zone) in order to convey it to the three-knife trimmer when it has cooled down.
